Key features of this article.
1) The difference in proper motion between red dwarf and red giant stars is examined. A cut-off at 40 mas/yr includes far more red giants than one at 60 mas/yr - (700 v 300) - but in either case a fairly small percentage of the whole.
2) The V-J colour can be used as an estimate of spectral type.
3) A reduced proper motion diagram can also help distinguish between giants and dwarfs.
4) 2MASS colours can also be used.
5) Photometric distance (via absolute magnitude) and spectral type equations are given.
